Dashamoola powder (Dashamula)

Dashamoola powder is a traditional blend of ten distinct botanical roots, widely utilized in Ayurvedic culinary and wellness traditions. The blend is composed of two groups: the Brihat Panchamula (five larger roots) and the Laghu Panchamula (five smaller roots). In the kitchen, it is rarely used as a standalone spice but rather as a foundational base for decoctions, medicated ghee (ghrita), and nutrient-dense broths. From a culinary perspective, Dashamoola possesses a complex, earthy, and slightly bitter profile. It is traditionally simmered into liquids—such as water, milk, or meat broths—to impart a grounding, warming quality to the dish. Because the roots are fibrous and woody, the powder is typically used to create a 'kwatha' (decoction) or infused into fats, which are then incorporated into soups, stews, or grain-based dishes to enhance their digestibility and restorative properties.

Preparation notes

For best results, simmer the powder in water or milk until the liquid reduces to one-fourth of its original volume. This extraction process ensures the woody essence is fully released. It can also be lightly toasted in ghee before adding liquids to mellow the bitterness.
