Ajwain (Carom Seed) Digestive Water (Yavani Jala)
A warming, aromatic infusion of carom seeds used to support digestion, reduce bloating, and balance Vata and Kapha doshas.
Ajwain water is a foundational Ayurvedic digestive aid, traditionally prepared by decocting carom seeds to extract their potent essential oils. Known for its pungent (katu) and heating (ushna) qualities, this preparation acts as a deep-acting stimulant for Agni (digestive fire). It is particularly valued for its ability to pacify Vata-related bloating and Kapha-related sluggishness, making it an ideal beverage during the cooler, damp seasons of Shishira, Hemant, and Varsha. This simple infusion helps to clear obstruction in the digestive tract, supporting the movement of Vata downward (anulomana) and alleviating feelings of heaviness after meals. By gently stimulating the appetite and clearing ama (metabolic waste), it serves as a gentle yet effective daily tonic for maintaining digestive rhythm.

Ingredients
- Ajwain seeds (Carom seeds) — 1 tsp

Method
- 1. Lightly crush the ajwain seeds using a mortar and pestle to release the essential oils. (Tip: Crushing ensures better extraction of the active principles.)
- 2. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a small saucepan. (Tip: Use filtered water for best results.)
- 3. Add the crushed ajwain seeds to the boiling water, reduce heat, and simmer for 5-7 minutes until the water turns a light golden-brown color. (Tip: Do not over-boil as it may lose its volatile aromatic properties.)
- 4. Remove from heat, strain into a cup, and let it cool to a comfortable, warm temperature. (Tip: If adding honey, ensure the temperature is below 40°C.)
