Date & Sesame Laddoo (Khajura-Tila Modaka)
A warming, Vata-pacifying snack made from dates and roasted sesame seeds, perfect for winter energy.
These wholesome energy balls are a traditional Ayurvedic preparation designed to provide warmth and sustained nourishment during the colder months of Hemant (early winter) and Shishir (late winter). By combining the unctuous, grounding qualities of black sesame seeds with the sweet, building nature of dates and the catalytic properties of ghee, this snack serves as an ideal Vata-pacifying tonic. In the Ayurvedic tradition, sesame is highly regarded for its ability to pacify Vata dosha and support the health of the Asthi (bone) and Shukra (reproductive) dhatus. When prepared as a laddoo, it offers a dense, nutrient-rich snack that supports digestive fire (Agni) while providing the necessary heavy, oily qualities required to counteract the cold, dry, and mobile nature of the winter season.

Ingredients
- Black or White Sesame Seeds — 1 cup
- Soft Dates (pitted) — 1 cup
- Ghee (Clarified Butter) — 1 tbsp
Method
- 1. Dry roast the sesame seeds in a heavy-bottomed pan over low heat until they begin to pop and release a nutty aroma. (Tip: Do not over-roast, as this creates excessive dryness.)
- 2. In the same pan, melt the ghee and add the chopped dates. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the dates soften into a paste-like consistency. (Tip: Using high-quality, soft dates (like Medjool) makes the binding easier.)
- 3. Remove from heat and stir in the roasted sesame seeds while the mixture is still warm. (Tip: If adding spices like ginger or cardamom, add them now.)
- 4. Once cool enough to handle, grease your palms with a little ghee and roll the mixture into small, firm balls. (Tip: Rolling while warm ensures the balls hold their shape.)
