Punarnava Kashaya (Boerhavia Diffusa Decoction) (Punarnavadi Kashaya)
A traditional, warming herbal decoction used to support kidney function, liver health, and healthy fluid balance.
Punarnava Kashaya is a traditional Ayurvedic decoction prepared from the roots of Boerhavia diffusa. Known as the 'rejuvenator' of the body, Punarnava is highly valued for its ability to support the urinary system and promote healthy fluid balance. This preparation is traditionally used to support kidney function and liver health, making it a staple for those looking to address internal stagnation or mild edema. In the context of the Varsha (monsoon) and Shishira (late winter) seasons, this decoction acts as a warming and drying agent, helping to mitigate the accumulation of Kapha dosha. By gently stimulating the kidneys and supporting the liver, it assists in the natural elimination of metabolic waste, aligning with the Ayurvedic principle of maintaining clear channels (srotas) for optimal health.

Ingredients
- Dried Punarnava Root (Boerhavia diffusa) — 10 g
- Filtered Water — 160 ml
- Raw Honey — 1 tsp
Method
- 1. Coarsely powder the dried Punarnava roots. (Tip: Using a mortar and pestle ensures the active properties are released effectively.)
- 2. Combine 1 part (approx. 10g) of the powdered root with 16 parts (approx. 160ml) of water in a stainless steel pot. (Tip: Classical texts suggest boiling until the volume reduces to one-fourth.)
- 3. Simmer on low heat until the water reduces to 40ml (one-fourth of the original volume). (Tip: Keep the pot partially covered to allow steam to escape.)
- 4. Strain the decoction through a fine muslin cloth into a clean glass. (Tip: Drink while warm.)
- 5. If desired, add a small amount of honey once the decoction has cooled to below 40°C. (Tip: Honey should never be heated; adding it to a lukewarm decoction preserves its therapeutic quality.)
