Pyaaz Raita (Palaandu Dadhi)
A cooling, digestive yogurt-based side dish featuring finely chopped red onions and roasted cumin, ideal for balancing heat in warmer seasons.
Pyaaz Raita is a cooling, digestive side dish that balances the sharp, pungent nature of red onions with the soothing, probiotic qualities of fresh yogurt. In Ayurveda, while raw onion is known to increase Kapha and pacify Vata, its combination with cultured dairy and digestive spices like roasted cumin transforms it into a palatable, cooling accompaniment suitable for the warmer seasons of Grishma and Sharad. This preparation serves as an excellent digestive aid, particularly when served alongside heavier meals. The addition of roasted cumin (Jeeraka) provides a grounding, carminative effect that helps mitigate the potential for indigestion, making this a classic, simple, and refreshing addition to a balanced Ayurvedic meal.

Ingredients
- Fresh plain yogurt — 1 cup
- Red Onion — 0.25 cup
- Roasted Cumin Powder — 0.5 tsp
- Rock Salt (Saindhava) — 0.25 tsp
- Fresh Cilantro — 1 tbsp
Method
- 1. Finely chop the red onion into small, uniform pieces. (Tip: Soak the chopped onions in a bowl of cold water for 5 minutes to reduce their sharp, pungent bite.)
- 2. Whisk the fresh yogurt in a bowl until smooth, adding a tablespoon of water if it is too thick. (Tip: Using a whisk helps incorporate air, making the yogurt lighter (Laghu).)
- 3. Dry roast the cumin seeds in a pan until fragrant, then crush them into a coarse powder. (Tip: Roasting the cumin enhances its digestive (Deepana) properties.)
- 4. Fold the onions, roasted cumin powder, and a pinch of rock salt into the yogurt. (Tip: Rock salt (Saindhava Lavana) is preferred in Ayurveda as it is less heating than sea salt.)
