Shunthi Kadha (Dry Ginger Decoction) (Shunthi Kashaya)
A warming, digestive-supporting decoction of dry ginger, traditionally used to kindle Agni and balance Vata and Kapha doshas.
Shunthi Kadha is a foundational Ayurvedic decoction centered on the potent properties of dry ginger (Zingiber officinale). In the classical tradition, Shunthi is revered for its ability to kindle Agni (digestive fire) and clear excess Kapha from the respiratory and digestive tracts. This simple yet effective preparation is designed to be warming, pungent, and light, making it an ideal companion during the colder, damp seasons of Shishir, Hemant, and Varsha. By boiling dry ginger powder in water, the essential oils and pungent principles are extracted into a bioavailable liquid form. Often prepared with a touch of jaggery to balance the sharpness or black pepper to enhance its thermogenic effect, this decoction acts as a gentle digestive aid and a supportive tonic for the body's natural respiratory defenses. It is a staple in the Ayurvedic kitchen for managing mild digestive sluggishness and seasonal congestion.

Ingredients
- Filtered Water — 2 cup
- Dry Ginger Powder — 1 tsp
- Jaggery powder — 0.5 tsp
Method
- 1. Combine 2 cups of water and 1 tsp of dry ginger powder in a small saucepan. (Tip: Using high-quality organic ginger powder ensures better potency.)
- 2. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the water reduces by half (to approximately 1 cup). (Tip: Simmering concentrates the medicinal properties of the ginger.)
- 3. Strain the decoction into a cup. (Tip: Use a fine-mesh strainer to remove any ginger sediment.)
- 4. If using jaggery or honey, add it now. If using honey, ensure the liquid has cooled to a warm, drinkable temperature (below 40°C) first. (Tip: Honey should never be boiled as it is considered viruddha (incompatible) in Ayurveda.)
