Yashtimadhu (Licorice Root) Tea (Yashtimadhu Kashaya)
A soothing, sweet-tasting herbal infusion traditionally used to support respiratory comfort and digestive balance.
Yashtimadhu, or Licorice root, is a revered herb in Ayurveda known for its sweet, cooling, and soothing properties. This traditional infusion serves as a gentle tonic for the respiratory and digestive systems, particularly when the throat feels dry or the stomach lining requires soothing. By extracting the essence of the root through a slow simmer, we create a beverage that embodies the 'Madhura' (sweet) rasa, which is naturally grounding and nourishing. This tea is particularly beneficial during the transition of seasons, such as Shishir (late winter) and Vasant (spring), when respiratory health is a priority. Its cooling nature makes it an excellent choice for balancing Pitta dosha, while its unctuous (Snigdha) quality provides comfort to Vata. When prepared with a hint of cardamom or ginger, it becomes a balanced, aromatic infusion suitable for daily support.

Ingredients
- Dried Licorice Root (Yashtimadhu) — 1 tbsp
- Filtered Water — 2 cups
- Raw Honey — 1 tsp
Method
- 1. Crush the dried licorice root pieces slightly using a mortar and pestle to expose the inner fibers. (Tip: Crushing helps extract the active compounds more efficiently.)
- 2. In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups of water with the crushed licorice root. (Tip: Use a stainless steel or glass pot.)
- 3. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-12 minutes until the liquid reduces by about one-quarter. (Tip: The tea should have a golden hue and a naturally sweet aroma.)
- 4. Strain the tea into a mug and let it cool until it reaches a comfortable, warm temperature (below 40°C). (Tip: Crucial: Do not add honey while the tea is boiling.)
- 5. Stir in a small amount of raw honey if desired and serve immediately. (Tip: Honey acts as a carrier (Yogavahi) to transport the herb's properties.)
